PROJECT SUMMARY
The Chashitsu is a traditional Japanese teahouse. It is where a host performs tea ceremonies for their guests. The tea ceremony was a space for conversation with guests who were often from warring families or different backgrounds. Here they could find diplomatic solutions to their conflicts.
It was also a place where those who may not otherwise have had a voice could make their thoughts known to those of influence.
In the same spirit, I created the CHASHITSU virtual exhibition to inspire viewers to explore themes of conflict, harmony and hospitality. Especially in regard to immigrants and others who are often treated with inhospitality here in the United States. We collaborated with Seattle-based artist, Yuri Kinoshita, who created a light-based art piece that embodies the Japanese spirit of welcoming for the teahouse.
We produced a 360° video, photography, videography, website, and prints of this work within the teahouse to give our online visitors a chance to explore the piece and the teahouse itself.

PROJECT BACKGROUND
Ours is a world of many perspectives and of many voices. However, it is this plurality that so often separates us, leaving us to find refuge in online forums or radio talk shows. Rather than seeking to understand those whose voices may be different than ours, we seek instead those whose voices echo our own. Far from uniting us or giving us a sense of belonging, we feel isolated in our uniformity.
How do we break these barriers of difference that we create?
As an immigrant to the United States from Japan, I have seen firsthand just how varied the voices of my adopted country can be. There are not only the voices that speak with the most insistence and the greatest volume, but those voices that are hushed, sometimes even silent.
Within the CHASHISTU, voices of great strength speak in hushed tones, allowing those of more reserve to be heard on equal terms. Thus, CHASHISTU is a place where it is possible to be heard, and to listen.

I feel that CHASHITSU would have an invaluable impact on my community by allowing those from different backgrounds and Cultures a gathering place of mutual respect.
PROJECT PROPOSAL
In this project, CHASHITSU, We would like to use the traditional Japanese tea house located in Japan Town to introduce contemporary Japanese Design and Arts. Our plan is to use videography, 360 degree video, photography, web tools, and print to make a virtual exhibition.
I propose to use my project CHASHITSU, to bring together artists and designers from a variety of backgrounds, who work in media varying from print to video to web to display their work within the replicated frame of a traditional Japanese tea house.
In Japanese culture, Chashitsu ( Japanese for "Tea house" ) is a place for people who do not know one another to meet and to share ideas, while the host makes the tea and guides the conversation.
The initiation of the tea ceremony is a very solemn experience and serves as a basis of conversation for both the guests and the host. Unlike a coffeehouse chain store, there are no cell phones, no laptops and no online games – only the dignity of polite society. Much in the same way that the traditional Chashitsu often laid the groundwork for mutual understanding, I hope that CHASHITSU can lay the framework for greater understanding and appreciation of those whose voices may be different and of how our voices have evolved through time.
